My Biggest Competition

There are a lot of situations in life where we wind up competing with other people or things. There is the same type of company across the street that we want to get more sales than, or the other person in our class who always gets better grades, or the wind we have to fight against to get where we are going. All of these things push us to be and do better in our lives, to continually be better people.

Over these past few weeks, I have come to realize who is my biggest competitor in this sense; it's ME. Now this is not anything new, but let me explain:

Andrew and I have spent a lot of time running lately. I don't really like running, but I want to get in shape and be more healthy. Therefore I need to exercise. Every time I start a run my mind and body says "Wouldn't it be so much nicer to just sit at home on the couch and relax. We don't need this." I find that voice pushing me to do more and to be better.

I think that to truly become someone great in this life, regardless of social status, physical health, etc, we need to learn to master our selves. I am learning that this is a day by day and minute by minute struggle that we need to pay close attention to. Giving an inch is like giving a mile. So that is my challenge, to compete with my self and come out the victor.

  1. Great Post. It reminds me of a quote I read recently in a guide for a "40 Days Closer to Christ" challenge our Relief Society is doing. It says, "The happiness of a man does not consist in the absence but in the mastery of his passions" - Alfred Lord Tennyson. It's all about overcoming the natural man in EVERY way. Good luck!
